Bridge Books Shortlisted for An Post Bookshop of the Year 2023

Totally overwhelmed to be shortlisted for the prestigious An Post Bookshop of the Year 2023.

The ‘An Post Bookshop of the Year’ category recognises the vital role that independent bookshops and local branches of bookshop chains play in helping their communities discover and enjoy their favorite book.

For Bridge Books, being shortlisted for this award is a significant achievement. It underscores the shop’s commitment to not only selling books but also creating a space where readers and writers can connect.

The recognition is particularly meaningful given the competitive nature of the award, which draws nominees from across Ireland.

Being shortlisted for the An Post Bookshop of the Year 2023 is more than just an honour for Bridge Books, but I am also really grateful that it also brings national attention to Dromore too. The town sits between some larger towns with a bigger tourist draw, that we tend to get overlooked, but we have so many little treasures to be discovered.

Independent bookshops play a really important role in our cultural landscape and over the years I feel the shop has become woven into the fabric of the community of Dromore.

I’ve also been committed to supporting local authors, by regularly featuring their work and signed copies and inviting them to our local book club.

I also offer a personal service to all my customers, helping them discover reads that they will enjoy or help them choose the perfect gift for a loved one. I regularly get phone calls from customers asking for advice, recommendations and my selections.

As well as a book club I also have an option for locals to pay it forward and gift books to specific people, local charities, schools and organisations.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges for many small businesses, and Bridge Books was no exception. But I adapted quickly, implementing online sales and home delivery services to continue serving its customers. This adaptability not only helped the business survive but also strengthened its bond with the community, who rallied to support their local bookshop during difficult times.

I really hope to continue promoting literature and community engagement and supporting my customer’s love of books…and maybe one day win!
