THE ARTIST. Vincent van Gogh is considered one of the world’s greatest painters, his work having had a huge and far-reaching influence on 20th-century art as well as remaining visually and emotionally powerful to this day. He painted Irises, one of almost 130 paintings he completed while at the Saint Paul-de-Mausole asylum. The composition of the deep blue and purple hues of the blossoming irises, set against the contrast of the greens of the leaves and the oranges in the ground, creates a dynamic, joyful and vibrant painting.
